Blog Post #5 : Writing Experiences

In going through the process of completing drafts, getting feedback, and revising I have learned more and more about myself as a writer. Coming into my first semester of college my writing was what I was most worried about. I have learned where I could improve on going forward and what I am doing well. Throughout the semester I have noticed my writing skills improving little by little. While writing I am finding out that I am doing a good job of creating an outline, proofreading and using appropriate vocabulary. These are all skills I have practiced in order to improve as a writer. I sometimes find myself struggling in being creative, grammar and sentence structure. I have noticed the same struggles in my writing since highschool. When writing I feel confident in being able to get my message across clearly and being able to organize my writing, creating outlines has helped me when structuring my writing. When writing I doubt myself when looking for sources (if any are needed), sounding repetitive and making sure my writing makes sense. In order to become a better writer for the rest of my college years, I have set some goals. My first goal is to read more often, reading allows you to get more familiar with good writing. This is something I would like to improve because I do not read much besides what is assigned for homework. My second goal is to be more open to getting my papers revised. Revision is important in writing because it allows someone else to give you feedback. I have never been open to feedback and asking for help, this is something I have to work on in order to improve as a writer. My final goal is to go over the basic writing skills again. Having proper writing, grammar and spelling is key to effective writing.

  1. Hello Jonathon! I too am revising, writing more, and getting feedback from all different directions. I totally understand what your worries and doubts are when writing. I often have trouble staying on focus and answering the full prompt. This is a huge problem because that’s what writing essay’s is all about, answering a prompt. However, I don’t have a very long attention span, so I often loose track and go off topic or I sound repetitive. I have been able to work on this a lot and I do a good job of staying on task, but I still only answer like half the prompt. And with receiving feedback, I am always open to it because I want to know if my essay makes sense to others. When the feedback is from a friend or classmate, I love to receive feedback, but when it’s a professor or parent, it’s very scary. But those are always the best people you have on hand to get feedback from. So don’t hesitate!

  2. Jonathan, I completely agree with your response. I too feel like I’ve learned a lot about where I am at with my writing skills. I feel like I’m getting better because we exercise our writing skills on a nearly daily basis in this class. The feedback I receive from my peers has been critical to my development in writing and has helped me realize what I need to fix in my writing skills.I think with the more times that I write I get a little bit better and eventually end up not having to struggle so much or have to double check with the way that I write stuff down and the way that these blogs work, it gets less and less hard. I also like that she sends us a different topic to write about and eventually learn how to knock stuff out and it’s not a challenge anymore to write about unfamiliar topics. -Moises Galeana
